Love
An intense explosion of the best,
most indescribable warmest feelings
A gush of ecstasy travels through my veins
My heart skips a beat at the sound of only one name

My skin unquestionably surrenders to his touch
I the imperfect one, the inadequate, the average,
smiles in the most perfect way
My silly eyes sparkle like the illuminating stars,
which light the world from up above
My face glitters wonderfully as a result of his love.

I yearn for endless conversations
for everlasting companionship, for his
undying passion, for his love

Faith continues to blossom for I know we
will always be together
My insides dance and I smile as I remember
the incredible lightness and irreplaceable sensation,
that is of living

My heart reassures me that despite all of life’s
uncertainties, our love will continue to flourish,
that this is just the beginning.

Bishop Curry in Stingtown

JOSEPHINE RIOS
Feature Editor

On February 9, 2001 Bishop Victor T. Curry, President of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP Miami Branch), spoke to an assembly of students and teachers.

Bishop Curry is a senior pastor, teacher, and founder of New Birth Baptist Church. He is the first African American to own a radio station, which is WMBM. In 1986 he received a bachelors in science from Florida Memorial College. In addition, Bishop Curry received his masters in ministry from Jacksonville Baptist Theological Seminary and is currently a candidate for a doctoral degree in theology.

Bishop Curry has been honored with many prestigious awards such as the 1989 Citizen of the Year in Miami, Humanitarian of the Year in 1991, the 1998 NAACP Image Award, and a Future Leader of America by Ebony magazine. On the day of his arrival to our school he addressed diverse topics. Bishop Curry spoke about the importance of black history and how students can create and define the African American experience through family, church, politics, and culture. He also mentioned the importance of cultural awareness and preservation.

One of the reasons why Bishop Curry relies so heavily on his faith is because “any institution that can keep people from losing their mind in the midst of troubles is considered a powerful institution.”

In appreciation for the time he devoted to the various organizations, Bishop Victor T. Curry was also awarded with a plaque that stated, “Success is to be measured not so much by the position that a person holds in life, but by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed.” Bishop Curry’s emphasis was on personal responsibility and a “vision to victory.”

Silver Knight
nominees are...

MARISOL GUERRA
Co-Focus Editor

The Silver Knight awards have been a tradition for many years. Twelfth grade students in public, private, and parochial schools all participate in order to obtain the Silver Knight award.

The purpose of this award is to recognize outstanding high school seniors for unselfish service to their school and community.

The beginnings of this honorable mention can be traced back to 1959 when John S. Ridder, publisher of The Miami Herald, initiated it all. The winner is awarded with the Silver Knight trophy and a cash prize.

All of the nominees are selected by the high schools which they attend. Judges then read the nomination forms and later conduct interviews with each nominee.

The winner and three honorable mentions per category are selected thereafter.

RAHIM HAKIM ALI

GRAD Day, or Get Real Academic Dialogue Day, is a program that will be initiated this year to educate Stings about meeting the requirements for graduation.

The administration is very excited about this program which will be held on February 22, 2001.
“GRAD Day will be held on an early release Thursday and the entire hour of each class on the early release day will be devoted to this program,” said Assistant Principal Marty.

Each class will begin with a ten minute televised introduction of the topic to be discussed that hour.

The next ten minutes of each class will be a teacher-led discussion and question-answer session for students to respond to the information presented on the televised introduction.

During the remainder of the time, quizzes, homework, and/ or an essay in response to the topic will be assigned.

Students will also have a chance to express their concern or address needed changes in the school.

The mission of GRAD Day is to enhance the state of knowledge of Miami High students regarding their academic status and their goals.

Ms. Marty further added, “It will be a great chance for freshmen to see where they should be going and seniors to know where they should be.”
