Stingtown’s wrestlers began their season with a powerful bang and have stayed on top of the game since then.

They have gloriously dominated 15 out of the 20 matches encountered. This is an extraordinary achievement for a team that hasn’t had 12 wins in the last five years.

The Stingaree wrestling team is composed of seven dedicated veterans as well as several hard-working rookies. They are headed by their captain, Andy Gonzalez, and co-captain, Evelio Gonzalez.

Andy Gonzalez said, “We are working hard in practice to accomplish our goal, to win the district title as a team.” With this thriving spirit, these fearless Stingarees prepare to pin the competition at every match.

The wrestling team currently holds the honor of having two undefeated members, Andy Gonzalez at 119 pounds, Olvin Espana at 125 pounds, and Joseph Ochoa wrestling at 130 pounds. Both Olvin Espana and Joseph Ochoa have records of 21-03. Other top wrestlers include Nelson Coto and George Gonzalez. Jesus Fernandez has won fifth place in GMACs which features nearly 16 competing teams in Miami-Dade County.

These committed athletes have enjoyed victories over schools such as Champagnat, North Miami, South Miami, Norland, American, Columbus and Coral Gables. One of their most triumphant moments occurred as they pounded the Eagles of Southwest; it was the first time they beat the Eagles in nearly seven years.

Evelio Gonzalez, co-captain, admits that “We have dedicated more time to the sport and that’s why we have improved so much this year.” It seems that discipline and commitment will lead our proud wrestlers to success. Their impressive record indicates that they have the skills and motivation to take the district title and full lineup for 2001.

Support the Miami Senior High School wrestling team and watch them face off at regionals against the Trojans of Hialeah-Miami Lakes on February 16 at 1 PM.

The football season is halfway over but it seems like it has lasted an eternity. What seemed to be a dream before opening night has flashed before the team’s eyes and has become an unexpected nightmare.

Following behind last year’s footsteps the team is on its way to finishing the season under the .500 plateau.

The football team stands tied for third in the district with an overall record of 1-3 and strutting a district record of 1-1.

Ahead of Miami High, in the district standings, are the Stings’ long time rivals.

Holding the first position are the Explorers of Columbus and in second place the Cavaliers of Coral Gables.

Even though for the past two years Miami High has lost its winning traditions, it hasn’t lost is its quality of producing top-notch players.

Coach Tillman expressed to The Miami Herald, "We are going to take some licks this year, but it is going to help us in the future."

It seems that the team has much talent but the Stings are still young and the only thing that will help the Miami High cause are those bumps along that road that will help them build character and maturity.

Coming up on the Stings’ schedule for the second half of the season is not an easy task, they will face the Cavaliers of Coral Gables once more.
