Using Respondus to Create an Assessment

In this lesson, you will familiarize yourself with Respondus. You will participate in a variety of web-based learning activities to help you explore the possibilities of using this tool in your online courses.

What is Respondus?

Respondus is a program that can be used to create Blackboard quizzes and tests. The questions and settings are created offline, and then published to your Blackboard course at your discretion. Respondus supports six question types and includes feedback. Tests created in Respondus may be saved to Microsoft Word format and/or uploaded directly into Blackboard.

Obtaining Respondus

For the latest version and fresh installation of the program, follow these directions:

Step 1: Go to the download site for the latest version of Respondus: http://www.broward.edu/securedocs/departments/itech/respondus.jsp. When prompted, enter your BC Novel user name and password (see figure below).

Step 2: The following page will appear (see figure below). Download the Respondus installation program by clicking either the Download from Server #1 or Download from Server #2 link.

Step 3: The file you download is named Respondus35Campus.exe. Locate the file on your hard drive and double-click it to start the Respondus installation program. During the installation process you will be asked to enter the name of the institution, the local support contact, and the installation password. Click License after you have entered the information (see figure below). Note: The information must be entered EXACTLY as follows:

Creating a Quiz or Test in Respondus

Step 1: Open Respondus and select Create

Step 2: Create a new file - give it a name and a brief description. You can create an exam or survey. Be sure to indicate what type of file it is (i.e., Exam or Survey). Select OK when finished.

Step 3: You are now at the Edit tab (see figure below). Notice that you can select Multiple Choice, True and Flase, Paragraph, Matching, Short Answer, Multiple Response, Fill in the Blank, Jumbled Sentence, and Calculated Questions. Note: The example below is for a Multiple Choice question. There are six steps to each multiple choice question:

  1. Title of Question
  2. Question Wording
  3. Answers
  4. Select the Correct Answer
  5. Point Value
  6. Final Settings (including 'Add to End of List', 'Insert into List', 'Clear Form', and 'Preview')

When have completed steps 1-5, click the Add to End of List button. Note: When you have a series of questions, questions may be repositioned.

Notice that once you start creating questions, they will be recorded (see figure below). If need be, you can select on any question and edit.

Publishing your Respondus Quiz to Blackboard

After you have completed making your Quiz or Exam you will need to publish it to your Blackboard course.

Step 1: Select the Preview and Publish tab.

Step 2: Select Publish to WebCT .

Step 3: Select the Publish Wizard button.

Step 4: A new window appears (see figure below). Under #2 (Choose an existing server, or "add new server" to add settings information for a new server), select - 'add new server' - from the drop down box.

Step 5: A new window appears (see figure below). You will need to configure your computer to "read into" Blackboard. You do this once and from then on, everytime you access Respondus from your computer, this step will already have been done for you. Use the figure below to set up your Blackboard Server information. Note: the username and password are the same that you use to access your Blackboard courses. When finished, select OK.

Step 6: You will be returned to the original window (see figure below) where the settings will now be filled in. Click Next. Note: It may take a few moments to connect to the Blackboard server -- you will see the hourglass.

Step 7: Complete steps 1-4 (see figure below), and click Next. Note: From the dropdown box, select the group or section where you would like the quiz or survey to be published.

Step 8: You will see messages indicating that your quiz or survey is being published. When finished, you will get a message that says Completed successfully (see figure below). Click the Finish button.
